Accessible BC Act requirement to update your accessibility plan

The Accessible Organizations Project (AOP) is a project funded by the Government of BC and led by Disability Alliance BC (DABC). The purpose of the project is to support over 750 Prescribed Organizations to meet the requirements of the Accessible BC Act.  As part of our role in supporting this work, this is a reminder of the requirement to review and update your accessibility plan, as stipulated in clause 11(2) of the Act. Organizations that had a 2023 compliance deadline are advised to review their plan by September 1, 2026.  For health authorities and agencies that had a 2024 deadline, accessibility plan updates are required by September 1, 2027.

As you will recall, many of the 750 + public sector organizations listed in the Accessible B.C. Act were required by September 1, 2023 to establish:

  • an accessibility committee
  • an accessibility plan
  • a publicly available tool to provide feedback on accessibility

These requirements were intended to get organizations to plan for accessibility in a way that is informed by the disability community with an overarching goal of removing barriers and becoming a more accessible province for all.

The requirements for an accessibility plan include outlining the activities and goals the organization is undertaking to identify, remove, and prevent barriers. The legislation is flexible on the content in the accessibility plan, as organizations determine the content of their own plans, but with the following parameters:

  • Prescribed Organizations must consult with the accessibility committee
  • make the plan publicly available
  • the plan must be reviewed and updated every 3 years (i.e. September 1, 2026)

Further directions in the legislation when updating your accessibility plan include:

  • consider any comments received under public feedback
  • consult with your accessibility committee.

We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions or need additional support! There is funding available to support work on accessibility plans, so please contact Accessible Organizations Project Manager Roberta McDonald for more information.
