In partnership with the adaptive mountain biking (aMTB) community and the Cowichan Trail Stewardship Society (CTSS), North Cowichan has improved trail accessibility on Maple Mountain, expanding recreational opportunities for aMTB riders. Guided by adaptive trail standards, improvements including wider bridge crossings, increased corner radii, and enhanced vegetation clearance have resulted in the development of a 6.4-kilometre aMTB-accessible trail loop utilizing the Story, Xylem, and Phloem trails.
Building on the success of this initiative, North Cowichan continues to support upgrades to its sanctioned trail network to improve accessibility and meet aMTB trail standards in additional locations. On Mount Tzouhalem, trails such as Double D and Bumblebee have also been enhanced to accommodate aMTB riders. Future investments in trail accessibility will continue to expand inclusive recreation opportunities and help ensure that more people can experience North Cowichan's outstanding trail network, regardless of ability.
