The enhanced audio‑visual system installed in the Bowen Island Municipal Hall Council Chambers in May 2026 significantly improves accessibility by making municipal meetings easier to hear, see and follow for everyone.
With the addition of Auracast technology, attendees can receive clear audio directly to compatible devices, supporting people with hearing loss and reducing reliance on traditional assistive listening systems. Extra screens improve sightlines so participants can better view presentations, speakers and visual materials from anywhere in the room or remotely.
Upgraded microphones that filter out background noise make speech clearer and more intelligible, benefiting both in-person and virtual participants.
Importantly, these improvements have also increased the reliability and readability of closed captions, making spoken content more accurate and easier to follow in real time. This is especially valuable for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing, as well as anyone who benefits from visual reinforcement of audio.
Together, these enhancements remove barriers to participation and enable community members, staff and council to more fully engage in council meetings, committees and public consultations, whether attending in person or remotely.
